Men in New Zealand will no longer need to have a prescription for a new Viagra that costs about $40 a tablet, new research has found.
The study, published in theNew England Journal of Medicinehas found.
The drug will be available in packs of four to eight tablets in the fourth and fifth treatment months of treatment, with a maximum of four treatment doses per month.
This makes it a preferred option for many men with erectile dysfunction who do not respond to a first line of treatment.
New Zealand's approved Viagra, the first oral medication to treat erectile dysfunction, will be available from October 2023.

"The new study demonstrates that men who take sildenafil, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction, may be able to benefit from the addition of a new medication that is more cost-effective and safer than the current treatment," Dr. Steven Nissen, director of sexual medicine and rehabilitation at New Zealand's state-of-the-art rehabilitation hospital, said in a statement.
The New England Journal study, which involved over 2,500 men, was based on data from the New Zealand National Survey of Health, Aging and Social Life. The researchers recruited 1,000 men who were at least 16 years old at the time of the study.
The men in the study had lost at least 5% of their original male sexual partners since their last contact with the study men in the previous year.

The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered a temporary recall of certain prescription drugs for their effect on men’s sexual function, after the FDA found the products had been improperly distributed by a company called Super-K. The company that makes Super-K sold the pills to Super-K, a company called Super-KZ. The pills were recalled because of their “unusually long lasting effects,” according to a FDA letter sent to company representatives.
Super-KZ has recalled products with “unusually short duration” effects from the FDA. These products include Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, Staxyn, Stendra, and Spedra. The FDA is investigating the recall of two products that were manufactured in India. A company called Super-KZ has sold the pills in the United States and Canada to other Super-KZ companies. The FDA has not released a comment on whether the recalled products are safe or effective.
The FDA issued a public notice of voluntary recall Wednesday, May 5, asking for a full response from Super-KZ. The FDA said it is continuing to investigate the matter.
Super-KZ is the largest manufacturer of prescription drugs in the United States and Canada. It makes the Viagra and Cialis generic versions of each drug. It has had about 20 million prescriptions written in the United States, the FDA said.
The FDA’s alert was prompted by reports that Super-KZ has received reports of severe liver problems, and a recent found that it had experienced an increase in blood pressure.
The FDA also said that reports of rare but serious side effects of the product were “very uncommon and generally not reported.”
The FDA’s action was taken on May 7, saying it has taken the recall appropriate and will continue it. The recall is still expected to be issued by the FDA in the coming days.
A company spokesman said the company does not know how many products were impacted by the recall. Super-KZ has not said how many products affected by the recall were sold by the company or by Super-KZ.
